Maybe my artist friends are lazy sacks of shit, just as I am, but I dunno. In my case, I was unable to get etherius to do any artwork specially for MT, but I was able to get him to let me go through his stack of sketchbooks and select stuff to xerox and scan. However, he didn't want his better stuff to be released under a license where he lost control of it, so that nixed some of the better stuff. The key, I think, is to find some poor sot who will agree to allow his art to be released under the OPL for "the exposure". Thus far, as above, nobody has been willing to do any work specifically for MT for that measly a reward. The response is always, "I'll whip up some stuff if I have time, but keep in mind that I must give my commissioned works precedence". Then, of course, I hear nothing else from them, probably because people who can draw are always being asked to "draw this, draw that, design my tatoo, etc". I feel that an OPL work is something of a more noble design than say a sketch of my favorite D&D char or whatever, but to them I guess is a combination of the fact that they won't get paid for it and people bug them about doing shit for free all the time.
